UN Water Conference: The EU joins efforts to address the global water crisis and ensure water security by 2050.

The UN Water Conference in 2023 is the first of its kind in almost 50 years. The aim of the conference is to mobilise global action to protect the resilience and safety of water.

At the United Nations Water Conferencein New York on 22-24 March, the EU will reaffirm its strong contribution to ensuring global water security by announcing 33 commitments that will start now. These commitments will support a vision of a world resilient to increasing water scarcity and water security for all by 2050.

The world is currently facing a water crisis caused by excessive demand, poor governance and the consequences of the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. 40 % of the world’s population lives in areas affected by water scarcity. Water resilience is essential to prevent and address current and future health, food and energy crises.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: In 2030, half of the world’s population is on track to be affected by acute water shortages. The good news is, together, we have everything we need to change that. We have scientific, technological and political knowledge. Most importantly, we have the ability to learn from each other and the desire to cooperate. As part of the Global Gateway strategy, we have committed over EUR 1 billion to water management and cooperation with countries in Africa and Central Asia to provide livelihoods, energy, food and peace.

The UN Water Conference in 2023 is the first of its kind in almost 50 years. The aim of the conference is to mobilise global action to protect the resilience and safety of water. The EU Delegation, led by Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica, will present the EU’s commitments under the Water Action Plan, a series of commitments based on EU policy measures and laws, leading watertechnologies and extensive support to partner countries on water and sanitation.
