Since more than two thirds of the European population live in cities, cities have a leading role in the social, ecological and economic transformation that is a priority of the European Green Plan. The European Green Capital Award was launched by the Commission to encourage cities to become greener and cleaner. The awards promote and reward the efforts of European cities that strive to reduce the impact on the local and global environment, thereby improving the quality of life of residents. Sixteen cities won the Green Capital of Europe award, and 17 smaller cities won the European Green Leaf award, creating a growing network of European cities that share a common vision and expertise and inspire others by their example.
