Europe ready for the digital age - new rules for digital platforms proposed

The Commission has proposed an ambitious reform of the digital space, a comprehensive set of new rules for all digital services, including social media, online markets and other online platforms operating in the European Union.

Digital Services Act

Digital Markets Act.

European values are at the heart of both proposals. The new rules will better protect consumers and their fundamental rights online and lead to fairer and more open digital markets for all. Modern single market regulations will encourage innovation, growth and competitiveness and provide users with new, better and more reliable network services. It will also support the expansion of smaller platforms, SMEs and start-ups, giving them easy access to customers throughout the single market, while reducing compliance costs. The new rules will ban the unfair conditions imposed by social platforms that have become or are expected to become gatekeepers and rulers of the single market. These two proposals are at the heart of the Commission's ambition to make this decade a "European Digital Decade".
