The EU Civil Protection Mechanism was activated to help Croatia after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake, based on a request from the Croatian authorities for assistance on 29 December 2020.
European Commission Vice President Dubravka Šuica and European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič visited the areas destroyed by the earthquake.
The quake, which hit the central part of the country, took human lives and caused great damage to numerous homes and infrastructure. In direct response, the European Commission has helped mobilize assistance from various Member States to send it quickly to the affected areas.
Direct assistance is offered by Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey, and includes much-needed housing containers, winter tents, sleeping bags, beds and electric heaters.
In addition, the EU Copernicus Emergency Management Service helps to provide damage assessment maps to the affected areas, while the EU 24/7 Emergency Coordination Center is in regular contact with the Croatian authorities to closely monitor the situation and direct further EU assistance.
