Agroecology: the answer to Europe's agricultural, social and environmental challenges

Reform of the common agricultural policy to change agricultural practices is key to achieving the European Green Agenda, the Union's strategy for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Agriculture is present in almost half of Europe's territory and is responsible for 10% of the EU's annual carbon emissions.

The European Committee of the Regions has proposed a comprehensive set of measures to promote agri-environment in the EU. Agroecology reduces carbon emissions in agriculture, encourages the recovery of biodiversity, restores soil fertility, prevents air and water pollution and increases the economic and social resilience of farms with healthy and affordable food.

COR members agree that the current reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is an indispensable opportunity to "green" the agricultural sector, reduce its negative impact on the environment and ensure food security in the EU.
